چکیده

Trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS), as the key enzyme for the synthesis of plants trehalose, has effects of enhancing its anti-dehydration, as well as protecting biofilm, proteins, and others from harm. Additionally, reproductive isolation between species can be broken with transgenic technology, and beneficial gene of other species can be transformed and utilized to improve resistance of crops. Rice, maize and other crops once were transformed with SOD, DREB and other drought stress tolerance genes at home and abroad, trying to improve its drought tolerance. However, the drought tolerance of transgenic offspring cannot achieve the requirements of agricultural production due to weak drought resistant ability of these genes, incongruity between drought-resistance mechanism and metabolic mechanism of these crops, and other factors. The transformation of TPS genes will be a new direction for studying stress resistance of crops in recent years.

A Comparative History of Resurrection Plants

In his article "A Comparative Literary History of Resurrection Plants" John Charles Ryan assembles a comparative history of resurrection plants through textual analysis of early botanical commentaries, herbal references, prose, poetry, and other sources. Resurrection plants include a diverse range of botanical species, typically of arid regions, that appear to come back to life after complete d...

Insights into the cellular mechanisms of desiccation tolerance among angiosperm resurrection plant species

Water is a major limiting factor in growth and reproduction in plants. The ability of tissues to survive desiccation is commonly found in seeds or pollen but rarely present in vegetative tissues. Resurrection plants are remarkable as they can tolerate almost complete water loss from their vegetative tissues such as leaves and roots. Metabolism is shut down as they dehydrate and the plants becom...

Drying without senescence in resurrection plants

Research into extreme drought tolerance in resurrection plants using species such as Craterostigma plantagineum, C. wilmsii, Xerophyta humilis, Tortula ruralis, and Sporobolus stapfianus has provided some insight into the desiccation tolerance mechanisms utilized by these plants to allow them to persist under extremely adverse environmental conditions. Some of the mechanisms used to ensure cell...

Enzymes and Metabolites in Carbohydrate Metabolism of Desiccation Tolerant Plants

Resurrection plants can tolerate extreme water loss. Substantial sugar accumulation is a phenomenon in resurrection plants during dehydration. Sugars have been identified as one important factor contributing to desiccation tolerance. Phylogenetic diversity of resurrection plants reflects the diversity of sugar metabolism in response to dehydration. Sugars, which accumulate during dehydration, h...

Programming desiccation-tolerance: from plants to seeds to resurrection plants.

Desiccation-tolerance (DT) evolved as the key solution to survival on land by the early algal ancestors of terrestrial plants. This 'first' DT involved utilizing rapidly mobilisable repair mechanisms and is still found today in mosses, such as Tortula ruralis, and ferns, such as Mohria caffrorum. The first seed plants lost vegetative DT while investing their seeds with tolerance mechanisms impr...

An Overview of Mechanisms of Desiccation Tolerance in Selected Angiosperm Resurrection Plants

The vegetative tissues of resurrection plants, like seeds, can tolerate desiccation to 5% relative water content (RWC) for extended periods and yet resume full metabolic activity on re-watering. In this review we will illustrate how this is achieved in a variety of angiosperm resurrection plants, our studies ranging from the ecophysiological to the biochemical level. At the whole plant level, l...
